Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
