The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show draws close, one notices a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
