A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
