Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
