European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
