Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
